Makaton was developed in the 1970s to help people with learning disability to communicate. It is now widely used with a variety of children with communication difficulties. Makaton uses speech and gesture, facial expression, eye contact and body language. It is a language programme which is based on a selected list of everyday words, such as Daddy , Door , Fall and In . Makaton uses speech together with a sign (gesture) and/ or a symbol (picture). This multi-modal approach, where one mode facilitates another, has been shown to increase opportunities for personal expression and development, participation in interaction and socialisation, and to increase access to education, training and public information. Formations are availale for parents. More informations : www.makaton.fr http://www.makaton.org/
