TEACCH - Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children ( Alternative communication )

The TEACCH method (Treatment and education of autistic and related communication handicapped children) was founded by Dr Eric Schoppler in 1966 in United States.

The method is the maximum structuration of time and environment to help children in their daily living and to help them get the more self-sufficiency as possible.

The time structuration is for example a schedule of the day or week with visual helps (pictograms, photos...) to help children to know in advance what will arrive and what will he do.

Space structuration is for example to design specific areas to play, to eat, to work.. to help children to get marks in their environment.

The primary aim of the TEACCH programme is to help to prepare people with autism (or other people with behavior problems) to live or work more effectively at home, at school and in the community. Special emphasis is placed on helping people with autism and their families live together more effectively by reducing or removing 'autistic behaviours'.
